Known since the 1990s as “the clear alternative to braces,”Invisalign is a thoroughly modern approach to straightening your teeth. If you are considering this solution, you might wonder what to expect. Here are some frequently asked Invisalign questions and answers.
How does it work?
Invisalign treatment begins with a 3-D digital model of your existing smile. We will morph the image to show you what to expect at each stage of treatment, and then use the model to create a customized series of aligners. The clear, comfortable, medical grade aligners gently shift your teeth into position. You will wear each set for 20-22 hours per day, for two weeks, or as directed. When it is time for the next set, you will simply change them at home.
What are the benefits of Invisalign?
Invisalign’s smooth aligners are more comfortable than braces, as there are no sharp pieces or rough edges to cut or scratch your mouth. The virtually invisible clear aligners let you laugh and smile with confidence, and since they are removable, you can eat whatever you want and perform your normal oral hygiene routine. We will see you for monitoring just once every four to six weeks.
I had braces, but my teeth later shifted. Can I use Invisalign?
It is not uncommon for the teeth to shift months or years after braces are removed. Invisalign is an excellent choice to correct this issue without undergoing another round of braces.
I have porcelain veneers. Will Invisalign work for me?
It’s possible, depending on which teeth need to shift and which teeth have veneers. We will assess your mouth to determine whether Invisalign will work for you.
Can I use Invisalign with a dental bridge?
Unfortunately, it is generally not possible to place Invisalign if you have a dental bridge. A bridge attaches your teeth to each other, and Invisalign moves each tooth independently. We will consider all of your existing dental restorations to decide which treatment is best for you.
Can I eat, drink, chew gum, and smoke with have Invisalign?
Since you can remove your aligners, you can do whatever you like when they are out. When they are in your mouth, though, be careful. It’s fine to enjoy both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages with your aligners in, as well as to eat small quantities of foods that are not sticky or hard. Just be sure to clean your aligners and rinse your mouth as soon as you can.
Remove your aligners before chewing gum, eating a full meal, or consuming anything hard or sticky. Smoking could discolor your aligners, but it will not damage them.
How much does Invisalign cost, and does insurance cover it?
Invisalign costs depend on several factors such as geographic location and your specific treatment needs. It is generally comparable to braces, though, and we will provide a full cost breakdown before we begin.
Dental insurance is complex. Some plans cover braces or Invisalign, some cover both, and some cover neither. We will help you understand your coverage and your out of pocket costs so that you can make an informed decision.
